New Delhi, August 29
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted an international gold smuggling racket on Friday with the arrest of eight passengers at the New Delhi railway station. As many as 504 gold bars with foreign markings were recovered from their possession.
The gold bars, valued at Rs 43 crore, were found hidden in the specially tailored cloth vests worn by the eight men, who were travelling on the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express using fake Aadhaar cards, an official said.
"Intelligence inputs indicated that the recovered gold bars carrying foreign markings were smuggled into India from Myanmar through the international land border at Moreh in Manipur and the smuggling syndicate operating from Guwahati was attempting to dispose of the contraband in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, which have thriving markets for the yellow metal," a senior DRI official said. — TNS
