The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre on a petition challenging to validity of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutes Act, 2004.
A Bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul asked the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice; and Ministry of Minority Affairs to respond in six weeks to the PIL filed by Delhi BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. Hehas sought statewise determination of minority status on the basis of population for the purpose of administering educational institutions.
Upadhyay wanted the top court to direct the Centre to frame guidelines for identifying minorities at the state-level. — TNS
